Performance
The S40 range kicks off with a 100bhp 1.6-litre petrol engine. The 2.4 petrol has a very lively yet refine feel. If you go for the turbocharged 2.5-litre T5, this offers 220bhp and a monstrous 236lb ft of pulling power. For the diesel lineup, the 1.6 diesel outputs 177 lb ft of pull. Owners can also choose from a great 136bhp 2.0-litre diesel - this is our pick of the range, it offers great value for money mixed with low running costs and a lively feel.
Ride & handling
At higher speeds, the S40 is very stable and controlled. With the S40, even twisty routes can managed easily, this is thanks to its minimal body roll with good levels of grip. The steering is responsive with a well weighted feel. The ride is firm yet comfortable.
Quality & reliability
All of the cabin is fitted with good quality fixtures & fittings. The five-cylinder engines which are also used in the S60 and S80, are all well proven so should not cause you any problems.
