Performance
The Zafira uses some of the engines available in the latest Astra, with a brand-new 1.8 and a 240bhp 2.0-litre turbo in the VXR model. There’s not a real duffer among them, although the 1.6, the mainstay of the range, isn’t as flexible as we’d like. We’d be tempted by one of the diesels.
Refinement
Overall refinement is very good. Road noise is impressively low – something that’s not easy to achieve with a big, open-plan cabin – and the engines we’ve tried are hushed when cruising, although the diesel is louder under load.
Behind the wheel
The sound, basic driving position of the original Zafira has been preserved in this version. However, the fittings are now more upmarket, and the more steeply-angled windscreen allows for bigger front-three-quarter windows and therefore better cornering visibility. Storage space still remains in short supply, though.
Space & practicality
The seven-seat layout of the first Zafira remains, but there’s more space for people and luggage. The two rear seats stow to form a flat boot floor when not needed, while the middle bench can be folded in half and slid up against the two front seats.
