Performance
Eight engines gives buyers a broad choice, and each one is perfectly up to the job. Petrol options range from a supercharged 1.8 to a fire-breathing 6.2-litre V8, but the diesels are more popular.
Ride & handling
Changes to the steering and springs make the E-Class a little sharper into corners and a little less prone to lean. In typical Mercedes fashion, it places an emphasis on ride comfort, whether you choose conventional or air suspension, but it's enjoyable to drive.
Quality & reliability
E-Class reliability has not been all you'd expect of a Mercedes, but the latest model has undergone rigorous testing and features 2000 new parts. Mercedes says that glitches, particularly with electrical parts, have been removed. Build quality is excellent.
Space & practicality
The Easy-Pack load system comes as standard in the saloon to make it easier to keep things tidy. There's plenty of room in both boot and cabin, but the transmission tunnel makes it best as a four- rather than a five-seater.
