Performance
All four engines in the lineup provide great pace. The smallest petrol is the 288bhp 3.5 litre V6, which is in the 350. The next a smooth 383bhp 5.5 V8, fitted in the 500. The range topping 63 AMG has a monster 6.2 V8 which outputs a staggering 507bhp. Diesel fans will have the 320 CDI, this is fitted with a 221bhp 3.0 V6 which is well refined. A 7-speed auto gearbox is also fitted standard.
Ride & handling
The E-Class chassis is modified for the CLS. This is done making ride flatter & helps it corner more eagerly. All models ride well, the coil-sprung 320 CDi is our favorite from the range.
Refinement
The CLS is a fantastically refined car. There's hardly any road noise from anywhere. All engines in the range are ultra smooth - as is the fitted auto gearbox. In addition, the accelerator response has even been programmed to prevent jerky acceleration from standing.
Behind the wheel
Drivers sit lower than in the Merc E-class. This car’s waistline is higher, in addition the three-pointed star is on the grille rather located than the bonnet. Therefore the CLS is not as easy as the saloon version to place. There is loads of space and adjustment to find the ideal driving position. Fixtures and controls look fantastic and are very easy to use.
