. Performance
There are three petrol engines buyers can select from: 1.4, 1.6 & 2.0 litre. Even the 1.4 is sweet, and runs well. The larger petrols serve up great performance. Mazda also offers 89bhp 1.6, 108bhp 1.6 & 141bhp 2.0 litre diesel options. The 1.6's are smooth yet pack a good punch. The best diesel is the 2.0D, however the petrol engines are better still.

Ride & handling
The 3’s low-speed ride is firm and sporty - but never uncomfortable. At faster speeds, the ride is very smooth excellent body control.

Safety & security
The Mazda 3 includes twin front & side airbags - all standard. Curtain ‘bags are fitted to all apart from the base S. All in the range have antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution system. The TS2 models and above feature stability & traction control. Alarm and deadlocks are also included on all models.

Space & practicality
The 3 is easily one of the roomiest cars in class. It can seat four six-footers with ease. Access to the rear seats are also good, this is thanks to large door openings. There is a good size boot which is well shaped, 60/40 split rear seats fold to make extra loading room
